Early Friday, a program update from the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike (CRWD) caused widespread IT outages globally. The disruption affected business operations for many airlines, banks, hospitals, and telecommunications providers. Additionally, key services from Microsoft (MSFT) and Amazon (AMZN) were impacted. As of 9 a.m. ET, tracking site FlightAware reported 20,465 delayed flights and 1,831 cancellations. Delta experienced 329 cancellations and 194 delays, while American Airlines had 279 cancellations and 211 delays. United Airlines canceled 142 flights and delayed 164 others. This outage caused CrowdStrike stock to plummet falling over 12% early in the day and closing down 11.1%.
In a statement on Friday, CrowdStrike Chief Executive George Kurtz said, "This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed… He said ‘a defect in a single content update for Windows hosts caused the problem.’” Although it wasn't a security incident or a cyberattack, it was still a significant error for the company, potentially leading to financial challenges. Reinhardt Krause, Investors Business Daily author, wrote, “However, CrowdStrike customers could seek compensation, analysts say. ‘There is a risk of large potential liability claims from customers that were affected by the outages,’ said Raj Joshi, a senior VP at Moody's Ratings, in a release.”
Additionally, BMO Capital Markets analyst Keith Bachman said in a report, “We believe there will be financial consequences from this issue… As one example, we think customers will be seeking relief and compensation from damages, which we think could include discounts or credits for both new contracts and renewals. Hence, we think there could be an impact on growth rates and cash.” This significant error highlights vulnerabilities in global cloud infrastructure and raises concerns about the likelihood of similar incidents occurring in the future. Investors in CrowdStrike should assess the financial and reputational impacts of this outage on the company's future.
