In CNBC’s article, “Boeing’s new outsider CEO Ortberg takes the helm, this time from the factory floor,” Leslie Josephs quotes Richard Aboulafia, managing director at AeroDynamic Advisory, saying, “This guy has a fantastic reputation and level of experience in the industry, He has a reputation for listening and for letting people push back.” Robert Kelly Ortberg has been named Boeing’s new CEO, with the challenging job of fixing the company’s damaged reputation. Having a background in aerospace from his time at Rockwell Collins, Ortberg is set to address Boeing’s major issues, such as production problems, rebuilding trust with regulators and customers, and dealing with a huge cash burn that has reached $8 billion this year. The company’s stock has fallen 37% in 2024, highlighting the urgency of Ortberg’s task.

Ortberg’s early efforts will focus on connecting directly with employees at Boeing’s Renton factory, with an emphasis on safety, quality, and openness. He will start by tackling ongoing problems with the 737 Max production line, including recent issues like a door plug blowout in a 737 Max 9. Boeing also faces delays in delivering new aircraft models, increased scrutiny from the National Transportation Safety Board, and the fallout from admitting fraud in the 737 Max certification process, which has led to the appointment of an independent corporate monitor.

Ortberg’s success will also hinge on mending relationships with key customers and suppliers who have been affected by production delays and quality problems. Aligning Boeing’s operations to meet customer expectations, including those of major clients like Southwest Airlines, will be vital. As Ortberg starts his role, the aerospace industry and investors will be closely watching his efforts to restore Boeing’s reputation and efficiency, which will be crucial for the company’s future and standing in the aerospace sector.
